Central Coast Success: The Story of a Local Internet Service Provider

Did you know that Surfnet has been around since 1995? Surfnet USA was the very first local Internet Service Providers to offer 56k speed dial-up service and nationwide dial-up numbers for traveling customers. (I can still recall the sound of that dial-up modem handshake.) Like so many startups, there were times we didn’t know if we would make it, but we rode the waves created by the rooster tails of big telecom and endured the resource gutting nature of economic downturn. Through it all, Surfnet has persevered and never lost sight of working hard to provide quality internet service to underserved and unserved populations throughout the central coast of California.

What began more than two decades ago from a small office in Scotts Valley, serving just one customer, has grown today to provide internet service to more than 2000 residents and businesses from Los Gatos to Nipomo. The few that started Surfnet Communications (and as it was originally known, Surfnet USA), are still working tirelessly to reach folks in the rural locations of Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Luis Obispo Counties with high speed broadband internet, while many of the big carriers abandon them. Even while we continue to engineer challenging rural setups (that big corporations won’t touch), Surfnet regularly tests and implements new fixed wireless and fiber technologies, to ensure a robust and secure network is always available to our customers.

Surfnet’s founders, Mark Morgenthaler, Ken Nye, and Dave Bookholt, are still working behind the scenes today for our customers, as well as our future customers. The Surfnet team has expanded in recent years to 10 full-time employees to accommodate the needs of a growing business that is due to the demand for high speed broadband internet no matter where you live or work. If we aren’t in your neck of the woods yet, then we hope to be soon. If we are, then we know that small businesses like Surfnet don’t survive and thrive without loyal customers like you…and we appreciate you!
