This pair of floorstanding speakers was built as a Christmas present for my younger son who lives in a small apartment in San Francisco. I didn't want him to get into trouble from too much bass so one 8 inch woofer in a ported alignment fit the bill nicely.
In order to keep the developement time down and to keep the cost under $500 I decided to start with the "Solo" kit from Madisound and add on a woofer. The Solo Kit consists of a Vifa M13SG09 and a Vifa D25ASG05 tweeter. These are both shielded so they can be set next to the television. The Kit comes with the crossover already mounted on a Printed Circuit Board. I used the Vifa M22WR-09-06 for the bass unit with a simple first order crossover. I mounted the bass driver on the side of a Pyramid shaped enclosure. Then I put it all in an attractive package, covered it in high gloss black plastic laminate and wrapped it up and put it under the tree. The result was much better than I could have hoped for.
The sound quality of this speaker continues to amaze me. It is smooth and silky. The Vifa bass driver does a respectable job in 1.5 cubic feet with a 3 inch ABS port 21 inches long. F3 is about 32 Hz. This sounds really great in a small room. This speaker taught me what imaging means and I listen to it for a reference whenever I can. I was so impressed with these drivers that I used the Solo Kit again for my surround speakers and I used two of the Vifa M22's on my next major project.
