SOUTH BAY SPEAKER BUILDERS

FEBRUARY 20, 2000

Hosted by Andy Unruh

Report by Steve Houlihan, Pictures by Shawn Harper

The South Bay Speaker Builders (also known as SB2) is a new group that has been meeting irregularly for the past six months. We have about 15 members and have had four meetings so far. We are located in "The Silicon Valley", whatever that is. Most of the members live in or around San Jose, California.

We had two informal measurement sessions at Steve Houlihan's house in Santa Cruz, and we have had two meetings at Andy Unruh's house in San Jose. We did some listening, and we did some measurements, and we ate some good food. A good time was had by all.

Here is a view of the listening room at Andy's house. Set up for listening are Steve Houlihan's all Vifa Pyramid Speakers, Andy's very trick Scan Speak two-ways, and two Shiva Subwoofers. Andy's Shivas are in 1 ft3 boxes with a lot of EQ. He is working on an all digital crossover and claims to have the worlds first digital Linkwitz Transform! The output of the software controlled crossover is on the computer monitor in the middle of the picture.

Here are a bunch of people eating instead of listening. From left to right, we have Bob Garnaas, Spencer, Diane, Walt, and our host Andy Unruh.

What is going on here?

Here are people eating and listening at the same time! All it takes is practice. We have XXX, Ken Seawright, Olen Rasp, and Emmet Zaworski.

Another serious shot of the listening lineup.

This beautiful SE-1 was built by Shawn Harper.

Shawn's SE-1 being measured using Andy's Clio system. They measured good and sounded great! Notice that it has gotten dark outside. Nearly time to go home.
