Report and Pictures by Steve Houlihan

This Basslist gathering was held at Laser Media, near Los Angeles International Airport. Rudi Blondia was our host and provided a large listening room. Thanks Rudi. During the day we listened to no less than 10 different speaker systems. I had a hard time getting any decent pictures because of the limited lighting, and many of the pictures that I took just couldn't be developed. Those that are useable are shown below but anybody who wants to, can send me their pictures, and I will put them on this sight. Also, if anyone can identify any of the people in the pictures, then please let me know and I will list the guilty parties along with their pictures. I will continue to update the info on this page as I get it. I will add links and additional info over the next few days. Any help in that regard will be much appreciated.

Here we have Steve Schenkel trying to figure out how to hook up his single ended tube amps to a custom DAC that he has been working on. He really wanted to show us that you really can have it both ways. The tube amp got confused between all those 1's and 0's and refused to play any music. In all seriousnous, however, I want to thank Steve for all his efforts in putting this affair together. I also look forward to hearing his Raven R2/ Cabasse 21M18 Towers driven by that tube amp. I think that is what they need to really go over the top!

Bass List members brought five two-way systems for everyones listening pleasure. At the top is the nOrh. This is a lathe-turned, very well built, two way using the Scan Speak 8545 and 9300. It is sitting on Steve Schenkels towers, as described above, which I believe is available from Zalytron. On the top right is a Joe D'Appolito designed MTM using Audax drivers also built by Steve.. Below that is the beautifully finished Aria 5R built by Dave Crawford. Nice job, Dave!

Added to the mix in this stack is the great sounding Eton/Accuton two-way designed by Geoffrey Dillon. I hope Geoffrey shares this design with us as I thought it was "Best of Show" in the two-way group!

When I first arrived, I was greeted by this scene. ORCA was setting up a family of two-ways using the Raven R1, R2, and R3. These were all in open-back boxes and sounded really great. There were many comments about how the large room sucked up all the bass, but I was sure satisfied with the bass from all three of these. They used only passive crossovers and a Baltic Birch box with dovetailed corners no less! In front of the ORCA offerings are Steve Schenkel's two two-ways. Just behind them is Andre's large open baffle 3-ways.

Here we have Kimon Bellas directing the setup of his smallest 2-way.

Here we have one of the ORCA guys sticking his hand through an expensive Focal woofer(just kidding).

The ORCA R1 2-ways are happily playing away while Andre's giant 3-ways rest in the background. Also visable in this picture is a few bucks worth of single ended amp power, crossover, and CD Player.

The real sleeper in this picture, however, is Deon's Aura 18 sub with three 18 inch passive radiators!!! It is lurking way back in the corner just waiting to shake the walls and gobble up small children. Great job Deon!

In this last picture we see the speaker that we all heard first. This definetly set a very high standard for everything that followed. This three-way open baffle design by Andre Perreault at http://www.E-Speakers.com features a Raven R3 tweeter, two Focal Audiom 7K2's and a 21 inch Cabbasse woofer. Tri-amped with all active crossovers. Wow! This will be available as a kit with the wildest baffle I've ever seen. Check it out.
