| Setting up your SurfnetUSA dial-up
connection for Windows 95/98. PART I:
Double click the "My Computer" icon in the upper right hand corner of your
desktop.
Double click on the "Dialup Networking" icon.
Double click on the "Make New Connection" icon.
Where it says "Type a name for the computer you are dialing:" take out
"My Connection" and type in "SurfnetUSA".
The window below ("select a device") should name your modem.
Click "next."
Enter the area code and phone number as indicated on your SurfnetUSA signup sheet in the
appropriate windows. The country code should be "United States of America".
Click "next".
The next window should say "You have successfully set up a connection called
SurfnetUSA".
Click finish.
PART II:
You should now have an icon named "SurfnetUSA" in dial-up networking.
RIGHT click on that icon and the click on the "Properties" item in the menu
that appears. A window named "SurfnetUSA" should appear with the phone number
that you previously entered and your modem specified under the tab named
"general".
Click on the button or tab that says "Server Types". It should say "PPP,
Internet, etc., etc." under "Type of Dial-Up Server".
The ONLY item checked under "Advanced options" should be "Enable
software compression".
IMPORTANT: DO NOT check "Log onto network"!
Under "allowed network protocols" ONLY TCP/IP should be checked.
NetBEUI and IPX/SPX must NOT be checked.
PART III:
Click on the button that says TCP/IP Settings
Select "Server Assigned IP Address".
Down the page select "Specify name server addresses".
For Primary DNS fill in: "208.201.152.2".
For Secondary DNS fill in: "208.201.152.3".
Leave both WINS entries as all zeros.
Make sure "Use IP header compression" and "use default gateway on remote
network" are checked on.
Click on OK.
Click on OK again.
Back in Dial-Up Networking you should still see the SurfnetUSA icon. To make a new
shortcut to the SurfnetUSA dial up connection on your desktop, drag (left click and hold)
it out onto an empty part of your desktop (and then let go).
Close Dial Up Networking. Close "My Computer".
Congratulations. You should be ready to connect to SurfnetUSA! If you have any
