Electronic Literacy
(e-Literacy) is a one-semester required freshman course. It has been designed to insure that all 9th
graders are introduced to keyboarding by touch (typing without watching
your hands), word processing, spreadsheet, charts, presentation software, and
Internet search. Microsoft Windows 2000
and Microsoft Office 2000 (Word 2000, Excel 2000, Power Point 2000) are the
selected software. The lab is equipped with
Pentium 500 PC’s.
The e-Literacy course
is an intense activity class. In order
for a student to succeed in class, he/she must have good attendance and make up
excused absences by working on assignments in the e-Literacy lab during posted
lab times or at home. A limited amount
of work may be done at home, but students are not to work together on projects
unless given direct permission by Ms. Kane.
Students are allowed three “free” tardies during a semester. After the third tardy, two points will be
subtracted from class work points for each tardy.
Proper business
behavior and respect for others is expected from everyone. Copying student's work from disk or other
media will be severely dealt with. An F
grade for the entire semester's work may be the result for both the student
lending and the student copying the work.
Misuse of equipment, desks, textbooks, or any other materials is
absolutely unacceptable behavior.
Students do not have the right to add, copy, delete or alter any
software setup or computer configuration.
It is the student’s responsibility to report any misuse of equipment or
materials to the teacher as soon as it is noticed. No Walkmans, CD’s, skateboards, cell phones, bikes, food or
drinks are to be visible in the classroom.
Class floppy disks are
not to be used outside of the classroom.
Students may not use any other disks into the classroom because of
possible viruses. Inappropriate use of
the Internet will be severely dealt with.
Students have the right to access ONLY areas of the computer system that
are designated by Ms. Kane. Students
may be denied access to computer classes for the rest of the school year or the
rest of their education at SHS. Every
student must have the Vandalism Policy signed and on file.
During the first
six-weeks, students will practice non-graded drill work through computerized
keyboarding programs to help them learn how to touch-type and improve their
speed and accuracy. All students will
receive either a Pass or Fail (P or F) grade the first grading period -- no
letter grades will be given. This Pass
or Fail mark will be determined by teacher observation of the student's ability
to touch type, testing, student progress, and the amount of time spent on drill
work.
The 1st
6-week grade is an indication of the student’s ability to touch type but is not
averaged into the final semester grade.
A student is far more likely to succeed in the 2nd and 3rd
6 weeks if he/she has learned to touch-type, as it will assist the student in
completing projects in a timely and efficient manner. A point system based on graded projects as well as tests will be
the basis for the 2nd and 3rd 6-weeks grades. The final exam will be included in the 3rd
6-weeks grade. The final semester grade
will be an average of the 2nd and 3rd 6-week’s
grade. A letter grade will be given for
the 2nd, 3rd, and final semester grade.
Incomplete grades must
be made up by the end of the next grading period. Failure to do so will automatically turn the incomplete grade
into an F grade.
