Much as Thoreau's essay on civil disobedience was seminal to the civil rights movement through its influence on both Gandhi and Martin Luther King, I believe that his essay "Walking" could be regarded as a manifesto of the walker/environmentalist. It is widely available in libraries and there is currently a small edition (perfect for carrying around in your pocket on walks!) available from HarperCollins as "A Little Book of Wisdom"...
